King Tides and High Surf Warnings Issued for Orange County Beaches
US · Published Jun 16, 2026
The National Weather Service (NWS) has extended warnings for dangerous coastal conditions along Orange County beaches through Friday, June 19,
King tides, the highest tides of the year caused by the gravitational pull of the moon and sun, are expected to combine with elevated surf to create hazardous conditions. The NWS warns of dangerous rip currents, breaking waves, and minor coastal flooding in low-lying areas during high tide. Specific areas at risk include Newport Island, Balboa Island, and other parts of Newport Beach. Residents and visitors are advised to exercise caution, as waves may wash people off beaches and rocks, and rip currents could pull swimmers and surfers out to sea. City crews in Newport Beach are actively installing flood-protection measures, including gap boards and pumps, to mitigate potential flooding impacts.

Why It's Important?

The elevated surf and king tides pose significant risks to swimmers, surfers, and boaters. Rip currents and breaking waves increase the likelihood of ocean drownings, while waves can capsize small boats near the shore. Low-lying areas, such as Balboa Island and Lido Village, are particularly vulnerable to minor flooding, which could lead to localized street ponding. Motorists are advised to avoid driving through flooded areas to prevent creating wakes that could exacerbate property damage. Beachgoers are urged to stay off rock jetties, which can be especially dangerous under these conditions.
